Dietary reference values for sodium and chloride

Published 3 July 2019

EFSA has just published two scientific opinions on the nutrients sodium and chloride and updated the “DRV Finder” in the process.

The publication this week of dietary reference values (DRVs) for sodium and chloride marks the end of ten years of work by EFSA’s nutrition scientists. It started in 2009 after the European Commission asked EFSA to update values last set in the 1990s for macronutrients such as proteins and carbohydrates, and all vitamins and minerals.

For those who are not familiar with it yet, the DRV Finder is an interactive tool that gives quick and easy access to EFSA’s Dietary Reference Values for nutrients. It is intended for end users of these values, such as nutrition and health professionals, risk managers, policy-makers, food manufacturers and scientists to retrieve EFSA DRVs in a way that fit their purpose. It is also meant to accompany/replace the downloading of PDF statistic reports (which are highly downloaded as figures show) helping the interested party in retrieving, accessing and downloading data in a much leaner process.

The interactive tool, originally in English, has been also translated into Italian, French and German - which are the additional official EU languages of EFSA - and other requested languages (i.e. Spanish, Estonian, Greek, Lithuanian and Czech).
