Deadline: June 8th, 2022

EFSA has launched a public consultation on the Draft Scientific opinion on the conversion of calcium-L-methylfolate and (6S)‐5‐methyltetrahydrofolic acid glucosamine salt into dietary folate equivalents.

This document provides scientific advice on the derivation of a conversion factor which allows to express the amount in µg of 5-MTHF added to foods as µg DFE.

For risk managers: Opportunity to join EFSA’s new study to strengthen its communication of scientific information

May 16th, 2022

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is the EU agency that provides scientific advice and communication on risks associated with the food chain. Risk managers are its primary audience and EFSA wants to make sure that it communicates the outcome of its risk assessments clearly and in a way that is fit-for-purpose.

If you are a risk manager working on measures to deal with risks associated with the food chain, please help EFSA improve how it communicates by taking part in the online survey.

Additional information on the survey, which is being conducted by IPSOS on behalf of EFSA:

  • Brief – it will take about 20 minutes.
  • Available in five languages – English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
  • Participation in your own capacity – we are interested in your individual contribution: you are not representing your organisation or your country when participating in this survey.
  • Anonymous – anonymity of the information is assured so that no identification of individuals or organisations can be made by EFSA.
  • At all levels of government – risk managers dealing with food safety at EU, national, regional, or local level across the EU-27 can participate. Participation is completely voluntary. You may have also received this invitation from other sources (e.g. European Commission’s DG SANTE) that are helping to connect with broader risk management communities.
  • Findings – the results will help EFSA to improve how it communicates and will be summarised in a report to be made publicly available.

This project aims to make EFSA’s communication as clear and accessible as possible, in line with new provisions of the Transparency Regulation. If you have any questions, please contact the EFSA project team at socialscience@efsa.europa.eu. On behalf of EFSA, we thank you in advance for sharing some moments of your time and supporting its work on risk communication.

Re-launching of the #EUChooseSafeFood campaign

May 16th, 2022

Building on the success of last year, EFSA and its partners in the Member States are re-launching the #EUChooseSafeFood campaign on 16 May 2022.

Campaign rationale: in the context of the Transparency Regulation, and in close cooperation with Member States, EFSA is coordinating a campaign that brings the business of EU food safety closer to the general public and helps to build and maintain trust in the EU food safety system.

Objective: #EUChooseSafeFood is designed to raise awareness about the science behind our food. It tells a story about how scientists work together in and across national and European authorities to make sure the food we eat is safe. The overall goal is to encourage citizens to think critically about their everyday food choices.

Target audience: primarily targeting 25 to 45-year-old European citizens with an extra focus on future and young parents (based on insights from relevant social research).

Campaign approach: This year, EFSA will be working closely with 10 focus countries in the EU that have chosen to be part of the campaign. They are Austria, Croatia, Cyprus, Finland, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Spain, Poland, Portugal. The activities we will carry out with the 10 focus countries include, amongst others, media partnerships, involvement of influencers, media relations with generalist and specialised media, stakeholder engagement and events to engage the public.

How can you get involved?

  • Be an ambassador: promote and inform people about the campaign through your activities with colleagues and stakeholders (e.g. internal and external meetings, conferences, events, your personal social networks, etc.).
  • Follow the campaign: stay up to date on campaign developments via the campaign website and EFSA’s social media channels and share the various campaign resources – visuals, films, social media posts etc. – the campaign will produce.
