Call for Interest: Participation in a workshop on system-level barriers for the effective use of NAMs in regulatory decision-making

June 18th - 20th, 2024, Oslo, Norway

The Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food and Environment (VKM) is disseminating a Call for Interest to attend the Collaboration to Harmonise the Assessment of Next Generation Evidence (CHANGE) workshop to be held in Oslo, Norway, on 18th - 20th June 2024. The goal of the workshop is to learn from experiences about the structure and culture of regulatory science, with a view to bringing forward the date of effective use of new approach methods (NAMs) in regulatory decision-making. This is a complex and ambitious goal, with a unique focus on system-level factors that affect the use and utility of NAMs. They are seeking broad participation of actors from NGOs, national and international authorities and agencies, industry, and academia to ensure that all voices are heard, and all experiences accounted for.

The project aims to contribute to past efforts by taking an innovative approach and focusing on system factors that are unexpected or hard to observe. This workshop will bring together an international, interdisciplinary, and cross-sectorial group of leading experts in regulatory toxicology. As a key stakeholder/expert in the regulatory toxicology domain, your experiences and opinions can be crucial to the discussions.

CHANGE is led by the VKM, supported by the Evidence-Based Toxicology Collaboration (EBTC), and funded by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) (a Country-Specific Tailor-Made activity under the new Focal Point Framework). CHANGE will host three annual workshops (2024, 2025, 2026), to explore (2024) the systemic structures of regulatory toxicology to identify barriers for implementation of NAMs deemed important by groups creating NAM data and the groups using the data and opportunities for interventions; reflect (2025) on the importance for uptake and implementation of NAMs data in risk assessment and risk management to gain consensus on what is actually important; and decide (2026) what should be done to break down the barriers by prioritising practically achievable steps for action and developing recommendations.

The three-day workshop (lunch to lunch) will have a maximum of 80-100 attendees. To encourage an open and free discussion, the Chatham House Rules will apply during the workshops. There is a strong expectation that participants will participate in the full length of the workshop, in order to maximise exchange of ideas across the agenda. The workshop will be digital device free to allow for optimal collaboration and focus. There will be ample time for coffee breaks and meals for participants to network and socialise, continue the doubtlessly exciting discussions, and keep up with their day-to-day obligations outside the meeting itself.

Read more about CHANGE and the workshop here on VKM website

This Call for Interest will be open until end of April 2024.

Please register your interest using this form.

The VKM will review responses to this Call for Interest on an ongoing basis, and make their assessments based on the goal of achieving a balanced and relevant composition of the workshop, for example balance between researchers, risk assessors and risk managers, global participation, etc.

There is no registration fee for workshop participants, but participants must carry their own costs travel costs, hotel costs and all meals not included during the workshop.
